Reported by at 12:38, Thu 27 October 2016

Police in Kasese are investigating the district health officer, Dr Yusufu Baseka, for allegedly embezzling more than Shs14 million that was meant for immunisation of children below five years. The Rwenzori East police spokesperson, Mr Suwedi Mansur, on Monday said Dr Baseka was released on police bond at the weekend as investigations continue. He said the health officer’s arrest stemmed from State House Health Monitoring Unit team, adding that police were executing an order. “His arrest was coming from the [Health] ministry and his file has been forwarded to Kampala for advice,” Mr Suwedi said. The chief administrative officer, Mr Mathias Ndifuna, said he had warned the suspect of the accountability “but he seemed not to be serious until he was arrested the day after meeting all the health in charges and warned them on absenteeism little knowing that it was accountability”. He said the refunded money will be put on the consolidated fund. In Kabarole, police are also holding a health worker in charge of Kidubule Health Centre III for allegedly embezzling Shs4 million meant for immunisation. Ndifuna explained that the DHO failed to supervise his juniors and give proper accountability accordingly. This is the second time Dr Yusuf Baseke is arrested for nonperformance as he executes his duties. In Kabarole, Police are also holding a health in charge of Kidubule health centre III for allegedly embezzling Shs 4 million meant for immunization. The Resident District Commissioner, Mr Stephen Asiimwe said last week that theft among civil servants was alarming in Kabarole district calling upon all stake holders to join hands and save the situation.
